Lets Talk Planning
Our strategy is simple, pick out three or four places we want to explore, find our flights and search for lodging. Sound easy? It can be that simple. Our trips are researched sometimes a year in advance. Starting this soon gives us plenty of time to check airline flights on multiple days and times to see the price trend. The furthest out from a trip we have purchased plane tickets was eight months in advance. For longer, internationals trips we have found the extra time gives us the convenience in planning activities and finding our lodging.
For some of our shorter and closer off-peak travels, we have found purchasing tickets three months in advance is sufficient. One year we booked an end of March spring break trip to Florida on January 1st and got a great deal on flights. I say have fun with it, don’t stress and enjoy finding a great deal.
We have been avid users of Kayak.com for the purchase of airline tickets. Some nice features of Kayak are you don’t have to be a member to use the site and you can set up email notifications for price adjustments on your selected flight dates. There is also a grid pattern to input multiple departure and return dates that shows the cheapest flight for each combination of days.
I am not saying other ticket vendors are not great either, we have been happy with what the site has provided us for our travel arrangements. Use whatever site you are most comfortable navigating through the transportation process with.
